Tucson, Arizona – April 22, 2002
Modular Mining Systems, Inc., the world leader in computer-based solutions for maximizing mine productivity, has received an order to install both its IntelliMine® Open Pit and Underground systems at El Soldado, Cia Minera Disputada de las Condes S.A., a subsidiary of Exxon Minerals Chile, Inc.
El Soldado, located approximately 135 km northwest of Santiago, Chile, is a tightly integrated underground/open pit copper mine with an annual production of more than 22 million tons per year.
El Soldado will utilize the system throughout its operations on a variety of equipment. The IntelliMine® open pit system consisting of MasterLink™, ProVision™, and DISPATCH®, will include: 7 trucks, 3 drills, and 3 loaders. The underground system consisting of the IntelliMine® Leaky Feeder communication system, coupled with DISPATCH® will include: 7 LHDs, 6 drills and 5 jumbos. Installation is currently underway and start-up is scheduled for late June 2002.
“With this system El Soldado will be able to interface with virtually all of its equipment to retrieve equipment health information,” said Scott Baker, General Manager of Modular’s South American Division. “In addition, MasterLink™ provides them with a wireless network that allows supervisors and managers to continue working while in the field. For example, with a PDA or laptop foremen can consult mine plans, as well as retrieve and write e-mails. Any kind of Windows-based work that would normally be done in the office can now be done in the field.”
MasterLink™, a part of Modular’s world-class IntelliMine® mine management system, is a 2.4-GHz spread spectrum wireless communications network designed to significantly increase the amount of information that can be sent over the radio channel. Based on Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) technology, MasterLink™ dramatically speeds transmission rates to at least 50 times faster than conventional 9600-b/s narrow-band systems and 10 times faster than 900-MHz systems. Gains are even realized over conventional 2.4-GHz wireless-routing schemes due to Modular’s embedded routing algorithms, which integrate the entire network and provide self-configuration and healing characteristics.
With increased bandwidth and less telemetry congestion, MasterLink™ creates more data capacity, reduces interference and promotes faster synchronization. This makes it easy for mines to transfer information quickly and accurately between operations offices, field equipment, and personnel.
Compania Minera Disputada de las Condes Limitada, a subsidiary of Exxon Chile, Inc., operates two wholly owned copper mines and a smelter near Santiago, Chile. Disputada was the first industrial company to receive the country’s National Environment Award for Contribution to Environmental Management (1999).
