Australian Mines Move to MasterLink™ System

Tucson, Arizona – July 7, 2003

Modular Mining Systems has received two orders from BHP Billiton to upgrade the Mt. Arthur Coal and Goonyella Riverside operations to its state-of-the-art MasterLink™ wireless communications network. Mt. Arthur Coal and Goonyella Riverside are the first mines in Australia to adopt the cutting edge MasterLink™ wireless broadband technology, which enables W-LAN access across the mining operation with data transmission rates of 2 Mb/s.

Mt. Arthur Coal will upgrade its current IntelliMine® DISPATCH® UHF communications platform to incorporate a MasterLink™ broadband telemetry backbone, as well as convert its current system into a 'dispatcher-based' operation.

Goonyella Riverside Mine, in addition to upgrading its IntelliMine®DISPATCH® UHF communications platform to the MasterLink™ broadband telemetry backbone, is also adding two ProVision™ High-Precision GPS Drill systems.

"The MasterLink™ network, an 802.11b based communication system, is fast becoming an industry standard in the field," noted Eric Davidson, Managing Director of Modular's Asia Pacific operations. "The decision by BHP Billiton to implement the MasterLink™ communications network in two of its mine sites will enable these operations to remain at the forefront of current technology levels, as well as providing a platform for them to adapt future technological advancements with ease."

Implementation work at both sites will start in July and is scheduled for completion by late August.

About Mt. Arthur Coal:

Mt. Arthur Coal is operated by the BHP Billiton subsidiary Coal Operations Australia Limited / Hunter Valley Energy Coal (HVEC). Located near Muswellbrook in the upper Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Mt. Arthur is approximately 120 kilometers west of Newcastle, Australia. Mt. Arthur currently produces 4.6 mtpa of thermal coal, approximately 70% of which is exported.

About Goonyella Riverside Coal:

The Goonyella Riverside mine is the northernmost of the large, open cut coal mines operated by the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) in the Bowen Basin. Located near the town of Moranbah in Central Queensland, Australia, the site produces 11 million tonnes of coking coal per annum for export to Asia, Europe, India, the Middle East, and the Americas.

About the MasterLink™ System Network:

The MasterLink™ system, a part of Modular's world-class IntelliMine® mine management system, is a 2.4-GHz spread spectrum wireless communications network designed to significantly increase the amount of information that can be sent over the radio channel. Based on Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) technology, the system dramatically speeds transmission rates to at least 50 times faster than conventional 9600-b/s narrow-band systems and 10 times faster than 900 MHz systems. Gains are even realized over conventional 2.4-GHz wireless-routing schemes due to Modular's embedded routing algorithms, which integrate the entire network and provide self-configuration and healing characteristics. Utilizing IEEE 802.3 (wired) and 802.11 (wireless) communications standards, the MasterLink™ wireless communications network was created to function in the harshest industrial environments and can operate either standalone or as part of an existing Local Area Network (LAN) to connect field stations to a central computer or backbone.
