Tucson, Arizona – February 20, 2004
Gold Fields Ghana Ltd. has selected Modular Mining's IntelliMine® mine management system to improve productivity at its Tarkwa Gold mine. Tarkwa, a world-class open pit mining operation in West Africa, is located in south central Ghana, approximately 300 km west of Accra, the capital, and 100 km north of the port city Takoradi.
The IntelliMine® system selected by Tarkwa, which includes the DISPATCH®, MasterLink®, PowerView™, and MineCare® systems, will provide the following key benefits to the mine:
- Field proven system with optimization algorithm for productivity improvements
- 802.11 compliant communications
- Ability to expand the network as needed
- Advanced interfaces with OEM vehicle health monitoring
- ODBC compliant database for reporting
- Monitor equipment allocations from selective mining faces using handheld PDAs
- Optimized equipment fleet assignments
- Verify and monitor key operational parameters, such as TKPH, to enable real-time decision making
Additionally, Tarkwa can capitalize on Modular's experienced regional technical support, which is offered 24 hours a day, seven days a week (24/7). Modular support staff can easily 'dial in' to the system, diagnose, and trouble shoot to determine the best solution—providing Tarkwa with added value to keep its system at optimal performance.
"This is a very exciting project for us," stated Mike Jackson, General Manager for Modular Africa. "Tarkwa will be deploying a state-of-the-art mine management system second-to-none in the African region. With a full spectrum of IntelliMine® products, Modular is pleased to be involved with such a world-class operation."
Tarkwa is in the process of changing from contract mining to owner mining. As part of this project, they plan to utilize the system throughout its operations on a variety of equipment including: 24 trucks (145 ton), 10 loaders, 9 dozers, 5 graders, and 6 pieces of auxiliary equipment. Additionally, 19 MasterLink® access nodes will be installed and two foreman vehicles will be equipped with ruggedized laptops that include IntelliMine® and MasterLink® utilities for controlling and monitoring the operation, as well as browser and corporate client/server application. Site configuration has already begun. Start-up is anticipated for July.
